I just bumped into someone I haven't seen in
quite a few years.
I used to play football with him when I was
about 16!... up until we were about 18.
We lost contact and this basically means
that we haven't seen each other in about 15
years or so.
And he asked the usual questions:
"How are you doing?" etc.
And then a question that, when asked, I always
find that I have a few options in answering!
"What do you do for a living?"
It's a funny one, because depending on my
answer, I can prompt a short or a long
conversion...
For example, if I say "IT Consultant", it's a
job that people can understand (it's basically
working with computers) and even if I follow
that up with the fact that I work from home
people can still understand this.
(FYI: I often use this response when meeting
people at weddings and I don't really want
the attention or a long conversation!)
But, this time, I didn't... I went for the
conversation provoking "I work from home. I
run my own internet marketing business".
Boom!
There we have it...
What? How does that work? What exactly do you
do? What do you sell online? etc, etc.
It always prompts a conversation and sometimes
even some ideas from the person I am speaking
to as well!
And this was no different.
The guy that I bumped into went away with several
ideas and I got the impression that I'd made his
day...
(I also told him about the property portfolio that
we are building.)
It would have been far cooler if I'd then jumped
into my Aston and driven off into the distance,
but you can't plan these things!
Nope. I was dressed about as badly as I could be
and even the Range Rover was nowhere to be seen.
Oh well. He was suitably impressed nonetheless and
it was good to see him get so excited about what
I'd done since we last saw each other...
And that brings me onto the point of this email.
Yes, I do have one!
What would you be able to say to someone if you
bumped into them? Someone you hadn't seen from
school or in the last 5-10 years...
Or what would you say if you lost touch with
someone today and didn't see them for the next 5
years - when suddenly they ask:
"What have you been up to?"
Sometimes I take my business for granted. Sometimes
I forget what some people do for a living...
And don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that I'm
better than anyone. I worked for many companies and
did some awful jobs in the past!
The point is that I got out. I found a way that works
so much better...
